Litter Getters are Returning
By Cathy Patton

McDowell Solid Waste Authority President Harold McBride reminds the public that litter getters will be returning to McDowell County soon. Beginning in August, McBride said the litter getters would travel throughout McDowell County once per month.  The specific dates or places the litter getters will visit will not be announced, so McBride reminds the public to prepare now for the next round of inspections.  Deputies, Litter Control Officer Wendell Hatfield and SWA Office Manager Patricia Blevins will accompany the litter getters. “We’re giving people the chance to clean up heir property now, before the litter getters return,” McBride said. “If they don’t, they may be issued tickets.” McBride encourages the public to take advantage of the free monthly dump day at the Copper Ridge Landfill, which is

located in Capels. The free dump is the last Friday of each month, from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. “The County Commission and the Solid Waste Authority now have a zero tolerance policy on littering,” McBride said. “We had to get tough because we intend to clean up our county and keep it that way.” The Clean it/Green Program, which tears down houses, is also ongoing, McBride said. The program has been underway for a few months, and about two - dozen structures have been razed, he noted. “We have thousands of homes and buildings to tear down. It’s going to take a lot of time and a lot of money,” McBride said. “Whether it’s the Clean it/Green it Program or simply cleaning up their property, we’re requesting that the public to work with us in all facets of the ongoing cleanup.”
