If she's heard it once she's heard it a hundred times. “Yes I'm the first woman to serve on the McDowell County Commission,” Judy Cortellesi smiles.
The fact that she was victorious over six male opponents, including the incumbent, was no small fete for the fist-time office holder and wife of former County Commissioner Mike Cortellesi.
I've always enjoyed politics because I've always realized the importance of good government,” she says. “As soon as they were old enough, I encouraged my two daughters, Jessica and Cherilyn, to register to vote and participate in the political process.”
“Open, honest and fair government” remains Commissioner Cortellesi's mantra as she fulfills her term. “I haven't forgotten that promise,” she says.
Judy is employed as a secretary at War Elementary School.
